Steel on our jobs means one of two things. 1.Green Coat PLX a colour-coated carbon steel, softened so it can be folded for bespoke fabrication. 2.Stainless; a long life, and a surface that weathers and evolves rather than a coating. We install both. We do not treat them as the same product.

Green Coat PLX is SSAB Nordic steel with a thick zinc layer, about 350 g/m2, and a bio-based colour coat. It is made to be folded. It can be worked by hand down to about minus 15°C, meaning extreme climates have little negative effect. It can be soldered. The usual use is a standing-seam roof or facade: long trays, hidden clips, a colour that stays.
Manufacturer figures, where the specification is followed, run to a technical guarantee of up to 50 years and an aesthetic guarantee of about 25 years. Those are mill warranties or well constructed substrates,
The Oxford art studio and the Linden Gardens octagon on our projects page are this metal: Green Coat PLX, standing seam on the studio, flat lock into the valleys on the octagon.
The same coil forms cheeks, fascia's and feature walls. Use it when the roof is Green Coat and the wall should match. A vented cavity still applies. Do not fix coated steel tight to a wet board.
Half-round and box gutters, outlets and downpipes formed in the same coated steel as the roof, so the colour matches and the junction can be soldered. This is the gutter we fit on a PLX standing-seam roof. or deep pitch slate roof where broken slate may fail and impact with gutter at speed.
Stainless is the uncoated steel. We use tinsmith grades such as Uginox Patina and Uginox Top. Patina is the one that takes a soft weathered face on a roof that the rain can wash. Top is the one for fascias and soffits, where rain cannot finish the weathering.
Standing seam, flat lock, caseate, gutters and cladding, formed the same way as zinc. Stainless is the specification when the building wants a metal that will not rely on a colour coat, and when zinc is not the architectural choice. It is heavier in price than Green Coat and lighter in maintenance.
